We recently spoke with globally renowned artist Tinie Tempah about how being introduced to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu seven years ago has shaped his views on performance, resilience, mindset and mental health.

When people think of Tinie Tempah, they tend to think of chart success, sold-out shows and entrepreneurial achievement. A grappling mat is probably not the first thing that comes to mind.

Yet according to Tinie, that is where some of his most valuable personal growth has taken place. After building a career in one of the most visible industries in the world, he found that the most important lesson came from stepping into a room where status carried no weight.

“I think one thing I loved about getting into the jiu-jitsu space was how humbling it was,” he explained. “You get onto the mats and no one cares who you are, what you’ve done. It’s literally about your skill set.”

“I think mental health is real, and I was definitely at a place in my life, it was at the start of the pandemic. You didn’t know what was going to happen with the world. Everyone was anxious and, in some cases, scared of people.”

“It was a blessing that I was able to be around Tom Hardy around that time. He asked me to come down. I went to one gym in Richmond where he was training and he gave me my first gi as well.”

Hardy is one of the most prominent celebrity advocates of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. The actor has competed successfully in tournaments across the UK and has spoken extensively about the community, challenge and self-development the sport provides.

What began as curiosity quickly became part of his routine.

“From that moment on, I never looked back. It’s the first thing I’ll do when I get up. I get ready, spend time with my family, and then I’ll go and train.”

“Honestly, it just sets me right for the whole day. Any anxiety, any thoughts that I’ve got on my mind, it’s just an opportunity to release all of it.”

“Even just standing on the side of the mat waiting for your professor to let you get on, waiting years and years to be able to get a different belt or a grade.”

“There’s definitely a synergy there between athletes and artists. There’s definitely an understanding of what you have to go through.”

“It’s a sacrifice, isn’t it? I think to be doing anything at a high level, you have to sacrifice a lot.”

For anyone that’s watching this out there, find martial arts, take the right steps to deal with whatever it is that you’ve got going on, but also find martial arts because it’s a game changer.”

Yet despite having access to more information than ever before, the difference between winning and losing often comes down to something far less tangible: trust.

For Steve Brady, race engineer at MB Motorsport and Speedworks Motorsport, elite performance isn’t about choosing between instinct and information. It’s about creating a partnership where both can thrive.

“You can make a very fast car that the driver can’t drive. It’s not a lot of use to us, so you have to merge the two together. My job is to merge it together.”

That simple observation captures a challenge increasingly facing organisations across every sector. Technology can provide insight. Data can provide answers. But performance ultimately depends on people knowing how to interpret, challenge and act on that information.

Ask most people what a race engineer does and they’ll likely talk about telemetry, setup changes and technical analysis. Brady sees it differently:

“It’s, relaying what the driver can explain to me what he’s doing on track into the little squiggly lines I see to determine what the car is doing at that particular moment in time.”

The challenge is not simply understanding the numbers. The challenge is understanding the person generating them. Drivers experience a car through feel, instinct and experience, whilst engineers experience it through data. Neither perspective tells the whole story.

“I’m a translator in driver to data and then get the most out of what they can translate onto the car.”

The ability to translate between different perspectives is becoming one of the defining leadership skills of the modern workplace. Organisations increasingly need professionals who can bridge the gap between technical expertise and operational reality, between strategy and execution, between information and action.

Cook recognises exactly how valuable that partnership is:

“It’s very much a partnership with the engineering team. I am under no illusion that my engineer has more in-depth knowledge and more experience on chassis setup than what I have.”

That level of mutual respect creates an environment where expertise can be shared rather than protected.

“It takes a number of years working with them. It’s actually my second year with Gordon. He has a lot of trust in me now.”

“You start to build a trust and a working relationship, and that’s really important.”

Cook describes the same process from the driver’s perspective:

“Of course the engineer’s goal is to try and get the driver to buy into what they’re doing but it’s more of a discussion and we come to a conclusion based on logical thinking rather than emotional.”

That distinction matters. In high-performance environments, decisions cannot be driven by ego, hierarchy or emotion. They must be driven by evidence, expertise and a willingness to challenge assumptions.

Cook continues:

“As long as we reach the conclusion logically and we go through the steps to get there then I’m comfortable with all the changes that makes the car.”

The principle applies equally to leadership teams, project environments and workforce planning. People commit to decisions more readily when they understand how those decisions were reached. Trust is not built through authority. It is built through transparency.

The Competitive Advantage of Shared Understanding

One of the most revealing moments in the conversation came when Cook explained why his engineering background strengthens his relationship with Brady.

“One of the things I’ve got to my advantage is I’ve got a very mechanical background. I’ve got a degree in motorsport engineering. I’ve always built my own cars.”

That technical understanding helps eliminate friction:

“When we’re looking at diagnosing an issue we might have, I can correlate what a damaged or failing component can do to a car and it helps me link the two together very quickly, so we can shortcut any issues we have.”

In elite competition, reducing decision-making time creates a measurable advantage. Cook believes that shared language between driver and engineer accelerates performance:

“That means that I’ve got an understanding of what positive and negative certain setup changes can do, which again helps me and my engineer shortcut things when we need to.”

For employers, this offers a valuable lesson. The strongest teams are often those where individuals understand enough about adjacent disciplines to communicate effectively across boundaries.

In engineering, manufacturing and technology, innovation increasingly happens at the intersection of different specialisms. People who can connect expertise rather than simply possess it often create the greatest value.

Motorsport’s pace leaves little room for complacency. The calendar moves quickly. Decisions have consequences. Mistakes are exposed immediately. Yet Brady believes setbacks can be more valuable than success:

“You enjoy the success, but the failures are the big learning curves.”

It’s a mindset shared by many elite performers. Winning provides validation. Failure provides information:

“Anything that goes wrong that you can get right the next time you make sure that doesn’t happen again.”

Research into high-performance cultures consistently shows that organisations improve fastest when mistakes are analysed rather than hidden. Continuous improvement depends on learning, adaptation and accountability.

For Brady, the challenge isn’t avoiding every mistake. The challenge is making sure the same mistake only happens once.

“We have no time for errors.”

“It’s just pushing forward all the time.”

One of Brady’s most revealing insights comes immediately after drivers leave the car:

“Whatever’s happened in the heat of the moment, the emotions come out. They’re either complaining or they’re really happy. One way or another I need to get through that to the core information.”

This is leadership in its purest form. High-performing leaders acknowledge emotion without allowing it to cloud judgement. They listen carefully, identify what matters and focus attention on the information that drives better decisions.

Brady must simultaneously diagnose problems, coordinate mechanics and plan improvements:

“You need to balance what they can do to get you out on the race, plus what makes you faster. And that becomes the trickiest part of mine.”

That balancing act will feel familiar to anyone responsible for managing projects, teams or organisations. The challenge is rarely deciding between right and wrong, it’s deciding between what needs attention now and what creates long-term improvement.

“If you don’t work like this then you don’t have this combination. We prepared this combination for a long time… two years. We as boxers have only three punches… front, hook and uppercut. But our coach and team do it all as a combination.”

Transitions in sport are rarely straightforward. For Ryan Brierley, it wasn’t a gradual step away from a professional Rugby League career, but a quick, calculated move towards something far less certain. From Salford Red Devils captain to CEO of the newly launched Salford RLFC, his shift into commercial leadership came at a time when stability had all but disappeared.

Faced with professional and financial uncertainty during the collapse of Salford Red Devils, Brierley left the club he had supported since childhood to join Oldham. The easier path would have been to continue his playing career there. Instead, he chose early retirement and stepped forward into a new role with Salford’s phoenix club.

What stands out is the mentality Brierley brings from the pitch into the corporate world, one that naturally translates into leadership.

It’s built on a “next job” mindset, where focus stays firmly on what comes next rather than what’s just happened. As he explains,

“Rugby league has always been about that next job mentality. If you make a mistake, you move on quickly… that mental toughness is the same in the commercial world.”

Alongside that is a resilience shaped through constant challenge and rejection. “The amount of times I’ve been told no… even wanting this role or similar roles, I was told no hundreds of times I couldn’t have the job. Likewise, as a professional athlete, you’re told you’re not good enough, you’re too small… if you start focusing on that, you’ll never get anywhere.”

It’s this combination of perspective, persistence, and forward focus that makes Ryan’s transition into this next stage of his career feel like a natural progression rather than a departure. As captain, he had already been leading from the front; this next step is an extension of that responsibility.

Leadership in the commercial world, however, brings a different kind of challenge.

The immediacy of performance on the pitch is replaced by longer-term decisions, less visible outcomes, and a different level of responsibility. Navigating that requires clarity, not just in strategy, but in how people are led.

For Brierley, that starts with a simple and crucial idea: “Treating people how you want to be treated first and foremost… that’s the key to every successful organisation, top to bottom.”

He continued:

“Spending half an hour with Ged Mason, who is so people focused, it’s no secret why Morson are so successful… it’s something I want to mould our philosophy on.”

What stands out for Ryan is how quickly his new role requires perspective.

There’s a balance between experience and restraint, knowing when to contribute, and when to step back. “I’m having day to day meetings with staff, with players, but understanding my role as a previous player and now as CEO is you don’t cross that line between trying to tell the coach how to coach, trying to tell the general manager to how to manage, but you can offer your opinion and support and if it’s done in an honest and transparent way, it certainly goes a long way.

That awareness, knowing when to step forward and when to step back, is shaped by Ryan’s experience as a player. It gives him a unique, 360-degree view of the club, with the ability to understand and empathise with both players and staff.

The rebuild at Salford is still in its early stages, but the intent is clear.

There’s a focus not just on recovery, but on growth – including areas that have historically been underdeveloped in rugby league. Brierley’s experience as an agent in women’s football offers a broader view of what’s possible.

“With my work in Women’s football, I’ve been involved with brands like Nike, Puma, Under Armour… there’s a lot of opportunity that hasn’t been exposed to rugby league.”

That extends into a commitment to the women’s game.

“Making sure we kept on the women’s team was integral for us, because we want to make sure that we’re giving women an opportunity in sport. We want to keep the women’s team and grow that area. For someone in women’s sport, I’ve seen how commercially viable it can be as well. People want to be involved with women’s sports and the women’s pathway

There’s no clear blueprint for transitions like this, but what Brierley’s journey shows is that performance doesn’t stand still. It develops with experience, adapts to new environments, and grows as individuals take on new opportunities.

Morson sponsored boxing legend and community champion Joe Gallagher has been honoured with the prestigious British Citizen Award for Services to Recreation and Sport (BCAr) in a moving local ceremony at Mulino Restaurant.

The event was proudly sponsored by local property law firm JP Goldman, who, in collaboration with Mulino Restaurant, sought to host a meaningful local celebration befitting the remarkable contributions of Joe Gallagher to the community. The medal and certificate were presented by Mrs Diane Hawkins, Lord-Lieutenant of Greater Manchester, His Majesty The King’s representative in the region. The event was hosted by Wayne Devlin BCAa, Ambassador for The British Citizen Awards, who guided a gathering of family, friends, dignitaries and community leaders through an afternoon of recognition and celebration.

Joe, unable to attend the official ceremony at the Palace of Westminster on 24 July 2025 due to hospitalisation, was met with a standing ovation as he finally received his honour. Emotional tributes highlighted his extraordinary influence—not only as a trainer of world champions and founder of the awardwinning Joe Gallagher Academy, but also as a mentor and role model who has transformed the lives of countless young people across Greater Manchester.

Over three decades, Joe has overseen more than 450 professional bouts and nearly 150 title fights, creating opportunities for young people from disadvantaged backgrounds. His Academy continues to provide education and boxing training for 16–18-year-olds, ensuring his legacy extends far beyond the ring.

Reflecting on the award, Joe said: “This medal isn’t just for me, it’s for everyone who has walked through the doors of the gym and believed in themselves. Seeing young people grow in confidence and character has always been the greatest reward. I am very grateful for this honour and would like to thank the BCA and all my family and friends for their support and recognition.” The afternoon was filled with laughter, applause and heartfelt stories, capturing the essence of Joe’s lifelong service: dedication, humility and an unwavering commitment to helping others succeed.

As the UEFA Women’s Euro final approaches, with England set to face Spain this Sunday, anticipation is building for what promises to be an epic clash. But while we wait for the action to kick off, we are looking at some fascinating facts and see how far women’s football has come.

From packed stadiums across Europe to millions of fans watching around the world, the women’s game has broken records and finally claimed its rightful place on the global stage.

So, what’s the story behind this rise and why is the spotlight shining so brightly now? Let’s take a closer look at the journey that’s brought women’s football to the forefront.

Breaking records

Women’s football is gaining its momentum. As per the UEFA the current event is the largest UEFA Women’s Euro as the attendance has been record-breaking. Even before the tournament began, over 600,000 tickets were sold, surpassing previous records and setting the foundation for the most attended Women’s Euro ever.

This year’s Women’s Euro has been a huge success both in stadiums and online. During the group stage, social media engagements jumped 55% to 8.4 million, while views soared from 113.7 million to 189.4 million. Website and app visits also nearly doubled, reaching 30 million – up 92% from 2022.

This proves that women’s football can be as exciting as male’s and it is of the audience’s interest, gaining global recognition.

If it was not clear before, it’s undeniable now women’s football is unstoppable and here to stay.

Gender in the game. Who plays it better?

The debate over gender in sport is nothing new… and football is no exception. Women remain underrepresented across many sectors, often underpaid and faced with systemic barriers. And while the popularity of women’s football has surged in recent years, it still doesn’t rival the global dominance of the men’s game.

As per the Norwegian source, a study conducted by the University of Stavanger in Norway, the University of Zurich in Germany, and Southern Utah University in the US explored how gender biases shape perceptions of football quality. Over 600 participants watched clips of elite male and female players - some in clear view, others blurred to obscure the players’ gender.

The results were revealing: when it wasn’t clear what gender it is, participants rated the matches equally. But once gender was identifiable, the men’s games were rated more highly.

There’s still a significant amount of work required to ensure equal opportunities for girls and women in various professions.

Bias and stereotypes continue to influence how we perceive women’s football. Therefore, it is important to keep working on it.

The first £1 million female footballer transfer

The gender pay gap in sport is still significant. Across salaries, prize money, and endorsements, women are paid far less than their male counterparts… and football is no exception.

But momentum is shifting. As the popularity and visibility of women’s football continue to grow, so too does the financial recognition of its players.

In a historic milestone, 20-year-old Canadian star Olivia Smith became the first female footballer to be transferred for £1 million, joining Arsenal. This record-breaking fee surpasses the previous high of £890,000 paid by Chelsea for US defender Naomi Girma, making Smith the most expensive signing in women’s football history.

The move marks a defining moment for the women’s game and it is a sign of changing perception of women in sport.

The most goals scored by a woman

When it comes to scoring goals on the international stage, Christine Sinclair is the legendary Canadian striker who holds the world record for most international goals in football history, across both the women’s and men’s games.

Sinclair claimed the top spot in 2020 after scoring twice in the opening 23 minutes of Canada’s dominant 11-0 win over St. Kitts & Nevis. By 2022, she had reached an astonishing 189 goals in 310 appearances for her country.

To put that into perspective, the men’s record holder, Cristiano Ronaldo, has scored 117 goals for Portugal. While his feat is extraordinary, Sinclair’s achievement not only surpasses it but redefines what’s possible at the international level.

She’s not the only record-breaking woman in the game. Brazil’s Marta, another icon of the sport, isn’t far behind and is widely regarded as one of the greatest footballers of all time, male or female.

As old as the men’s game

Biases exist but the truth is that women’s football shares deep historical roots with the men’s game, even if it took much longer to gain recognition. Apparently, women were involved from the start of modern football, with the first recorded match taking place in 1881 between English and Scottish teams.

The first officially documented women’s match in Britain followed in 1895, when the British Ladies’ Football Club staged a North vs South clash at Alexandra Palace in London. Over 11,000 spectators turned out, proving early on that there was strong public interest in the women’s game.

Inclusivity is not something that can be achieved simply by saying the right things. It requires meaningful actions and a strong commitment to making it a reality.

In fact, women’s football enjoyed notable popularity before World War I, arguably more than in many decades that followed (it was banned in 1921 and that ban lasted 50 years!). But after years of being sidelined, the tide is turning. Today, interest, investment, and recognition are finally growing, bringing the game back in the spotlight.

Change is coming

So, why is women’s football finally getting the spotlight it deserves?

Its growing popularity can be credited to a thrilling style of play, the rise of inspiring female athletes, and greater visibility through media and social platforms. Major tournaments like the Women’s World Cup and UEFA Women’s Euro have showcased the incredible talent on the pitch while building national pride and shifting public perception.

Who could forget that unforgettable moment in 2022, when the Lionesses triumphed over Germany at Wembley in front of 87,000 fans? It was a victory and definitely a turning point. That win lit a fire across the UK and gave women’s football the respect and recognition it had long deserved.

Now, with momentum building and history still being made, all eyes are on the current squad. Here’s hoping for another iconic victory so fingers crossed for the Lionesses playing in the final this Sunday!

When you think of Timothée Chalamet, the first things that probably come to mind are his critically acclaimed performances as an actor and his effortless charisma. But in a recent speech at the SAG (Screen Actors Guild) Awards, Chalamet revealed something unexpected – a mindset that mirrors the discipline, focus, and resilience of a top athlete.

Is there anything to learn from the audience’s beloved ‘Timmy’? With his popularity, talent, and ambition for success, we now know it’s also his athlete-like mindset that helps him perform in films as brilliantly as Michael Jordan on the basketball court or Michael Phelps in the pool.

In pursuit of greatness

In his pursuit of greatness, Timothée Chalamet, the youngest-ever winner of the SAG’s Best Actor award, received his first major prize. Many believe the actor is long overdue for an Oscar, given his standout performances in Call Me by Your Name, Dune, and his most recent role in the Bob Dylan biopic A Complete Unknown. Widely regarded as one of his generation’s top talents, Chalamet has expressed a desire to be “one of the greats”. This is what he said:

I can’t downplay the significance of this award because it means the most to me, and I know we’re in a subjective business, but the truth is I’m really in pursuit of greatness. I know people don’t usually talk like that, but I want to be one of the greats. I’m inspired by the greats. I’m inspired by the greats here tonight. I’m as inspired by Daniel Day-Lewis, Marlon Brando, and Viola Davis as I am by Michael Jordan, Michael Phelps, and I want to be up there. So I’m deeply grateful. This doesn’t signify that, but it’s a little more fuel. It’s a little more ammo to keep going. Thank you so much.

The actor’s SAG Awards speech went viral, and it sparked a wave of divided opinions. Some praised his ambition, while others found his words bold, maybe even audacious. Similarly, Serena Williams embodied the athlete mentality throughout her career, staying at the top of her game for decades through discipline, perseverance, and an unshakable belief in her own abilities.

Tips from a world champion with a winning mindset

From British representatives, there is Natasha Jonas, a two-weight world champion and current holder of the IBF & WBC Welterweight belts. As the first-ever female British boxer to qualify for the Olympics, she’s been a trailblazer in the sporting world and a proud Morson ambassador.

Natasha shared powerful insights on the habits that shape her winning mindset, offering lessons that drive success in both sport and the professional world. Here are 7 tips from the world champion, giving us a glimpse into the mind of a successful athlete:

1. Set a goal

Setting a goal or a target is hugely important, whether that’s a short-term goal for the day or whether that’s a long term target.

2. Be present

Being present. Not worrying about what’s been and not really anticipating what’s coming. I just get up and think about that day and that training session at that moment when I’m heading to it.

3. Have a positive outlook

Try to be as positive as I can. You have a much better outlook on the day, if it’s a positive one instead of negative, which will in turn bring better results.

4. Take care of your diet

I think one of the biggest things that especially boxers or any weight-maintained sport will know is that obviously you eat well in the build-up to a fight or match, and once that’s over, the first rubbish thing you eat, you immediately feel rubbish. My diet is really good anyway outside of boxing, which makes me feel good.

5. Gain more knowledge

I always try in each camp to learn about myself in some way and I am a big fan and believer in the mental aspect of the sport. I work with psychologists to learn more about how I work and what makes me thick.

6. Manifest and visualise your goals

One of my biggest things, which I never, ever thought I did until I started giving talks in schools and realised my story, is that I’ve been manifesting things for a very long time. My mindset was always to match a person, to be as good as them, to be better.

7. Find inspiration and aim high

In terms of inspiration and the pursuit of greatness, Natasha mentioned a few who embrace the mindset of striving to be the best, to be elite… a drive that echoed in Timothée Chalamet’s speech:

From Mia Hamm to all the track and field athletes who’ve crossed over, including Marion Jones, I remember when she transitioned from basketball to track while I was living in America. At the time, I thought, ‘I want to do something like that and be elite at both.’ I’ve always looked at people and thought, ‘I want to be that – and better.’ That mindset has driven me to reach that level.

One of the most famous figures in boxing, Muhammad Ali, always said from the start, ‘I’m the greatest’ and arguably, he was. So, yeah, I think having big aspirations and talking them into existence is key in boxing, because ultimately, you’re trying to get people to believe in and see a vision that only you have.

The athlete-coded mentality - what it takes to succeed?

After learning from successful sportspeople, it is time to take this “athlete-coded” mindset beyond sports. In creative fields, business, and personal development, the same principles apply: the commitment to constant improvement, the ability to handle pressure, and the resilience to keep going when things get tough. This is what Timothée Chalamet’s speech reflected and what athletes like Natasha Jones have: a hunger for greatness and a willingness to do whatever it takes to achieve it.

We’ve asked Natasha about the possibility of transferring those seven habits into the professional world and she said:

I think a lot of things in sport are interchangeable. If you asked me what kind of person I am, I’d say I’m loving, caring, and family-oriented. I’m driven, and I try to be as punctual as I can, though my trainer, Joe, might disagree!

I always give 100%. I’m dedicated, and I work well both in a team and as an individual. If you asked an employer what they’d want from an employee, I’m sure many of those qualities would make the list. I can communicate at all levels, whether it’s with my trainer, my daughter, family and friends, or when delivering talks in schools.

So, what can we learn from this mentality? It teaches us that success isn’t solely about talent; it’s about dedication, consistency, and the courage to embrace failure as part of growth. No matter your occupation – whether you’re a new starter, a manager, a CEO, or someone working toward personal goals – adopting an athlete’s mindset could be the key to unlocking your full potential.

Thinking like an athlete and applying the mindset to the business world

When you picture a sprinter poised at the starting blocks or a swimmer just moments before diving into the water, there is no room for doubt. Years of hard training lead up to that crucial moment and hesitation can cost them victory. Interestingly, that same sense of pressure and expectation exists in the professional world. We all face challenges to overcome and goals to achieve.

That’s why adopting an athlete’s mindset can significantly enhance business performance. By practicing discipline, resilience, and a growth-oriented approach, professionals can push past self-doubt and unlock their potential. Just like athletes, business leaders and teams benefit from the lessons that Natasha gave us: setting clear, ambitious goals, visualising success, and having a positive success-oriented outlook are all useful practices that business leaders can emulate to navigate challenges and drive their organisations toward excellence.

With over 20 years of friendship and an abundance of winning horses and trophies shared, Champion National Hunt Trainer Paul Nicholls and Morson CEO Ged Mason have a storied history steeped in success.

With ITV’s recent Champions: Full Gallop documentary giving an insight into Paul’s day-to-day life as a trainer and the inevitable ups and downs of the world of horse racing, we spoke with him to get an insight into how it all began for him. We also discussed the origins of his friendship with Ged Mason that led them to take the racing world by storm.

Do you remember your earliest memories of getting interested in Horse Racing when you were younger?

“My Dad and my Grandad were in the police force, nothing to do with horses at all. I remember on a Saturday afternoon, I used to go when I was young and watch the ITV7 on a Saturday with my Grandad, who was hooked on racing and he was a friend of, Geoff Scudamore, who was Peter Scudamore’s grandfather. And I think I got hooked on the sport through Grandad.

My Dad bought me a pony, I became a jockey and the rest is history. I rode many winners and I was very lucky, but I was always fascinated with training and always wanted to train. I’ve loved every minute from the moment I started as a trainer. You have ups and downs, but you make the good days count and I’ve been very, very lucky to have some fantastic days and some fantastic horses.”

Do you remember your first big win?

“My first Grade One winner when it was a horse was called See More Indians, which belonged to the late Paul Barber. I was a great friend of Paul’s and we won a Grade 1 at Kempton on Boxing Day and won the Novices’ Chase at the King George all those years ago. That was the first real big winner.

Then in 1999, I’d been training for about eight years and I’d never had a Cheltenham winner. I remember that week where I had three winners, that whole week was the best of my career because everything took off after that. On the Tuesday at Cheltenham, a horse called Flagship Uberalles won the Arkle Novice Chase, on the Wednesday, Call Equiname won the Queen Mother Champion Chase, then on the third and final day See More Business won the Cheltenham Gold Cup.

Three winners like that in a week, having never had a Cheltenham winner was just unbelievable, that was probably my biggest-ever win. My whole career kicked off from there. I’m extremely lucky and I owe those three horses probably everything. In my sitting room, I’ve got a fantastic picture of those three horses and I always look at it and think I wouldn’t be here now if it weren’t for those three horses.”

Tell us about the first time you met Ged and how you connected over your love of horse racing?

“Well, I think it goes back a long way to a horse called Sporazene, and I think it was a friend, of Ged’s at the time, David Jackson, who had horses and through David, I met Ged. They then had a horse in partnership and Ged ended up with Sporazene, which was the first horse he owned with us, who was his first festival winner.”

“Sporazene won at Punchestown, then won at County Hurdle at Cheltenham and I think Ged was hooked from that point. From the day I met Ged, he’s been a generous man and he’s a gentleman. He takes losing as well as he takes winning. A good man can win and an even better man can lose.”

“Ged knows the game and we’ve become closer and closer over the years and have had better and better horses and had some amazing success. He’s a fantastic man to have on your team and I’m very proud to have the friendship I have with him”

“His enthusiasm from every winner is infectious and he’s obviously really enjoyed the game and over the years he got more of his friends involved and shared that passion with them. I think Ged enjoys winning to share it with his friends, and his family as much as any, it’s not a personal thing.”

“He loves sharing his success and he just loves the game, we’re very lucky to have him as an owner and a sponsor of the yard. I feel privileged to have met him and call him one of my very best pals.”

What are some of your favourite wins alongside Ged and Morson over the years?

“What A Friend was one of the best winners we ever had, he came from being an average horse to being a top horse. Lexus Chase in Leopardstown, he won two Martell Cups at Aintree. They were fantastic wins. Hermes Alan won a Grade 1 Challow Hurdle the season before last. Sadly, we lost Hermes, but he was a fantastic horse and he was destined to do very bright things”

“Sporazine when he won at Punchestown and at Cheltenham. Clan Des Obeaux is probably the best of them all, he won two King Georges. Monmiral winning a grade one at Aintree. Hitman, another fantastic horse. You can just go on and on and now he’s got some really super horses as well to run this season with his friends, Sir Alex Ferguson, John Hales, and Peter Done. I’d say he’s going to have a very strong team along with his pals.”

Is there a particular year or season where you had to overcome a difficult spell and it ended very well at the end of the year?

“Like in any sport you have good days and bad days. We’ve probably had some bad days with Clan Des Obeaux. He got beat at Newbury, ironically by one of my horses - a horse called Secret Investor, who was a good horse on his day. Clan had come back from a little bit of time off and I remember saying to Ged after we got beat the next day, I said don’t worry, he’ll win at Aintree next time.

He wasn’t really 100% fit, he had a few problems and of course, April came along and we won the big one at Aintree! So, it just shows you, they’re not machines, they don’t always win and in this game, as in any sport you do have ups and downs. You’ve just got to keep your head down and just keep moving forward. Don’t change things. It always comes right.”

What else is there left for you to achieve?

“To keep winning, really. I’m not far off 4000 winners in Great Britain. I don’t think anyone has done that before. I think we need another couple of hundred to get near that. Martin Pipe won 15 championship trainers, I’ve been champion trainer 14 times. It’d be nice to equal or possibly beat him. But we’re going to be up against a bit stiff opposition with Dan Skelton.

We’ve just got to keep on winning. I think the highlight for me, if I could, would be to win the Cheltenham Gold Cup with Ged, because winning the Cheltenham Gold Cup is the pinnacle. We’ve had horses run in the race before, but to win a Gold Cup one day for Ged would be top of my list.”
